Free coal load STL files for the Bachmann side dump ore car

Free STL files for eight hollow coal loads that drop into the Bachmann 92503 Side Dump Ore Car (Large Scale, 1:20.3), or any G scale mining cart with a 3 5/8 × 4 1/2 inch opening. Each load is open underneath, so an LED can sit inside and light up a load printed in translucent or glow-in-the-dark filament. Two sets: thin-wall loads for lighting, and standard loads for plain coal. No sign-up.

Coal for the night run

On the Wyldwood backlot the side dump cars run after dark. Ours are printed in a semi-translucent glow-in-the-dark filament with an LED tucked underneath, and the light carries up through the whole heap. Next stop is the layout at night, rolling through smoke-machine haze.

Hollow, with room for a light

Each load is a thin shell under a bed of about 1,900 individual coal chunks, open at the bottom with no legs or ribs inside. That keeps a load to roughly 50 grams of filament instead of a solid block, and leaves an 82 × 104 mm cavity for an LED board, an LED puck, or nothing at all.

Glow set or standard set?

The glow set thins the walls to about 0.9 mm and the roof to about 1 mm so more light makes it through, with a 1.35 mm rim around the base for handling. Print it on a 0.4 mm nozzle. The standard set keeps 1.35 mm walls throughout; print it in black or charcoal for coal that stays dark. Both zips include the fit-test ring.

Check the fit first

The loads were sized from a Bachmann 92503 Side Dump Ore Car: an inside opening of 3 5/8 × 4 1/2 inches and sides 1 1/4 inches deep, with 0.4 mm of clearance on each side. Other cars vary, so print the 6 mm fit-test ring before a full load. It uses a few grams of filament.

Questions

Will these fit my Bachmann side dump car?

They were measured from the Bachmann Large Scale Side Dump Ore Car (item 92503): a 3 5/8 × 4 1/2 inch inside opening with 1 1/4 inch sides. If your car measures the same, a load drops in with 0.4 mm to spare on each side. The same car in other colors likely shares the body, and the fit-test ring will tell you before you print a full load.

What light goes underneath?

Anything that fits the 82 × 104 mm cavity: a small LED board, an LED puck, or a battery tea light. Stick with LEDs; PLA starts to soften around 60 °C, so skip incandescent bulbs.

Do they need supports?

Plan on removable supports under the domed roof. They come out through the open bottom before the light goes in.
